History of Charms

  • Since ancient times charms have been crafted out of precious and common materials with animal figures and other symbols thought to bring good luck.
  • Many pre-historic cultures made charms from precious metals, bone, crystal and other gemstones and inscribed them with small spiritual and animal design. Carved shells and small trinkets have been discovered from many thousands of years ago.
  • In ancient societies charms were thought to bring good fortune and special powers to the wearer and were often known as Talismans or Amulets, worn to protect against bad fortune and evil spirits and they were often carried into battle.
  • From as far back in time as the Egyptians collections of charms have appeared on bracelets, necklaces and even crowns. These charms were often made of precious metals as well as being inlaid with gems and were often very intricate and beautiful.
  • By the beginning of the 20th century charms had become a highly desirable fashion accessory, Queen Victoria wore a charm bracelet with locket charms containing treasured family pictures and precious locks hair, the Queen was said to wear her charm bracelets when separated from her adored husband Prince Albert and this started a trend amongst the European noble classes.
  • With the Queen of England wearing charms they quickly became popular throughout much of Europe and from here the popularity spread worldwide.
  • During World War II soldiers returning home took with them charms brought from local craftsmen in the area they had been stationed as gifts for their loved one at home, and in the years after the war teenagers started to collect charms as a reminder of special events in their lives.
  • Today charm bracelets are often passed from mother to daughter and become a precious part of family history and they can continue to be added to create more special memories.
  • Sterling silver charms are now firmly established as a traditional gift, with many new and inventive designs charm collectors today have a huge range of designs to choose from and it’s easy to create a personalised sterling silver charm bracelet which is completely individual to the collector and a unique piece of jewellery.
